Deviant Cruse spellings

Cruse is generally an easier name than Cruwys to find in the censuses and GRO indexes. In the early years of civil registration it is common to find people indexed under one of the many variants such as Crew, Crewe, Crews, Crewes, Cruise and Cruze. The following deviant spelling and mis-transcriptions have been found to date in the censuses, General Register Office indexes, parish registers and in other sources.

    Karen, Thanks for these links. I was already familiar with the Irish links about Cruisetown and the Rathmore Cruises. I was not aware of the American Cruce publication which looks very useful. I've only glanced through it but it's very helpful to have transcriptions of the original PRs from Belfast.

    Pontius de Cruce is unlikely to be related to the Irish Cruises. The surname simply means "cross".

    Is there a chance my family name may be a variant? I have located in eastern France the spelling of my name used as a street name. so far that is all the connection I have found with the spelling.

    I've not come across the surname Cruey before in my research. It may well be that people with the surnames Cruse, Cruwys, etc. are mistranscribed as Cruey in a census or in other records but I don't think the surnames are related.
